Why the Natural Deodorant Option is the best for You

There is so much talk in recent years about natural deodorant and how we should all be using them and binning our antiperspirants. Do you find yourself wondering what the fuss is all about and if it really matters to you? Well I’m here to try and explain it to you in simple terms, without using lots of big, fancy, high falluting, words and hopefully by the end of it you will feel better informed to make the decision for yourself as to whether or not a switch is in order.

So first off, what is a deodorant? A deodorant prevents body odor by stopping the breakdown of bacteria in the armpits (it basically makes your pits smell good) ... whereas an antiperspirant, which also contains the active ingredient aluminum, plugs your sweat ducts and stops you sweating.

Now, here’s the issue with antiperspirants - your body needs to sweat. It’s how our bodies regulate our temperature and it’s one of the ways the body has of removing toxins. So its really not a good idea to be using something that stops that process.

There are so many conflicting reports on the internet regarding the use of aluminium based antiperspirants and the links to breast cancer, Alzheimers and other hormone related issues. It’s incredibly confusing as a regular Joe Soap to sit down and find a definitive answer as to whether using an antiperspirant is bad for your health. However, it seems to me that something that creates such controversy among the scientific community is probably something we should avoid until there are more answers.

That’s where your natural deodorant comes in. It’s an option that provides you with an alternative, that does the job and won’t create health problems in the future. Its kinder to your skin, your health and also, in the case of my deodorant which is a plastic free deodorant, the environment.

Now, I’ve heard all the negative things people have had to say about natural deodorants and while some of them may be relevant most are not. So what I’m going to do for you is take those worries or questions you may have and try to answer them for you.

Naturally Fresh…Deodorant. Buy Here

I make natural soaps and skincare. My business is called Naturally at The Wrens Nest. The most important thing to me when I was starting out my business was that I would use completely natural ingredients to create effective, skin loving products, that were kind to the environment. I personally spent at least 10 years trying all the different natural deodorants, trying to find the best natural deodorant that were out there and can honestly say, hand on heart, that I never found one that worked good enough for me to stop looking. So I created my own.

Hands down the best change you can make for your body. It took my body a couple of weeks to detox when I changed over but 100% worth it....Deborah

These are some of the most frequently asked questions I get about my Naturally Fresh…. Deodorant

  • DOES IT STOP ME SWEATING? No, it doesn’t. It’s not meant to. What you will find though is after a couple of weeks of using it, your body will regulate itself and you will most likely find you sweat less. I did.

  • WILL I SMELL ALL ‘NATURAL’ I.E WILL I SMELL OF BODY ODOR? No, you won’t. The active ingredient in my deo is bicarbonate of soda and what that does is neutralise the bacteria that live in your armpit so that when the sweat hits your pits, you won’t get that smell of b.o.

  • WILL I SMELL COTTON FRESH? Nope, you won’t because ‘cotton fresh’ is a manufactured smell. What you will smell of is the essential oils that I use in my deo - in this case either patchouli & lemon, lavender & lime or geranium & neroli.

  • WILL IT LAST AS LONG AS ANTIPERSPIRANT? Yes, it will. You may find in the first couple of weeks after you switch over from an antiperspirant to a natural deo that your body sweats a bit more than usual. This is perfectly NORMAL. Your body is just getting rid of the toxins from the antiperspirant and it will sort itself out pretty quickly. In those early weeks though you may use a bit more deo than usual. I find a tin lasts me between 2 and 3 months. A little goes a long way.

  • HOW DO I USE IT? My deodorant come in a tin. Its a creamy texture, thanks to the shea butter and coconut oil (which by the way will have your pits baby soft in a few weeks!) You just scoop a little out on your finger and smooth it onto your pits. Now that might sound a bit ‘icky’ to some people but that’s because you are thinking of what your antiperspirant feels like - a bit thick and sticky. This is a smooth, soft cream so when you’re done you can just rub it into your hands or as one customer told me recently, she massages it into her cuticles and her nails are growing faster than ever! Its super easy to use.

  • WILL IT STAIN MY CLOTHES? I’ve lost count over the years of how many tee shirts I had to throw out because the arm pits were stained or turned a horrible yellow colour. If it was doing that to our clothes, what was it doing to our bodies? My deodorant will not stain your clothes. You will find when you’re applying it that it just sinks into your skin.

  • WILL I BE LEFT WITH WET ARMPITS AND WET CLOTHES? Not at all. My natural deodorant sinks straight into your skin, similar to putting on a body butter, so your pits and clothes will be dry and ready to go straight away.

  • WILL IT BE GOOD ENOUGH TO USE FOR SPORTS OR EXERCISE? Yes, of course. As you’ll have read above, it won’t stop you sweating but it will stop the stink (wink, wink) and you can also swipe it along your feet if you suffer with excessively stinky feet!

  • CAN ANYONE USE THIS NATURAL DEODORANT? Simply, yes. Its a natural deodorant for kids, for men and for women.

My Naturally…Fresh Deodorant, available in Patchouli & Lemon (the boys love this one), Lavender & Lime or Geranium & Neroli.

So there you have it. You can spend hours (or even days) lost in the internet wormhole that is natural deodorant versus antiperspirant and probably not come out of it non the wiser but I do think its pretty safe to say that using aluminium based antiperspirants is a bad idea for our health. The thing that I find turns most people off using a natural deodorant is the fear that it won’t work or will smell funny or is messy to use. I hope I’ve allayed some of your fears in that regard and that you will give them a try. Your future self will thank you for it!

I absolutely love this deodorant. I was honestly a bit sceptical when I first ordered it but its brilliant, feels great, no spraying (aerosols) or wet arm pits (roll-ons) and I think the deodorant effect lasts longer than any anti perspirant I’ve used...Orna
